TOP CAT - 1962 HANNA-BARBERA TV ALLEY CAT PALS!

Today while working, I had on the DVD set of the classic 1962 Hanna-Barbera cartoon TV series, TOP CAT. I love the series, so I thought I'd post some TOP CAT art. Here's the leader of the gang, TOP CAT with BENNY THE BALL, CHOO-CHOO, SPOOK, BRAIN, FANCY FANCY and OFFICER DIBBLE. The top image of TOP CAT (based on a TOP CAT style guide pose) and the bottom image of OFFICER DIBBLE were done by me. Both pieces are markers, colored pencil, brush & ink on coquille board. I inked the character art of CHOO-CHOO, SPOOK, BRAIN and FANCY FANCY for the TOP CAT style guide for Warner Bros. Consumer Products. I believe these were penciled by Mark Christiansen, then colored by one of the WBCP designers. Click on each image for a larger view! E-mail me at powsley@flash.net. Thanks! -- Patrick Owsley

Here's an 8" x 10" color sketch that I did last week for UNDERDOG fan, Roxanne Flynn of Scranton, PA. Roxanne is the biggest UNDERDOG fan that I know of. To say that Roxanne loves UNDERDOG is an understatement! Glad you liked the sketch, Roxanne!

FRANKENSTEIN JR. 12" BANK from FUNKO!

Yesterday, Brian Mariotti sent me this image of Hanna-Barbera's FRANKENSTEIN JR.. Brian is the President of the great toy company, Funko. Funko has produced a lot of great bobble heads and vinyl figures over the last few years of some of our favorite cartoon pals. This is the design for the new 12" FRANKENSTEIN JR. coin bank. Brian tells me that the bank features moveable arms and FRANKIE's head is removed to retreive coins. I'm not sure when the 12" FRANKENSTEIN JR. coin bank will be available. Brian says the bank is "still in the works." I really hope to create the FRANKENSTEIN JR. character art for the bank's packaging. It's great to see this character being merchandised! Looks like another sensational Hanna-Barbera product from Brian Mariotti and Funko! Click on the image for a larger view.

PRECIOUS PUPP - HANNA-BARBERA TV FRIEND!

I was just watching a compilation VHS tape of Hanna-Barbera's PRECIOUS PUPP cartoons. Along with THE HILLBILLY BEARS, PRECIOUS PUPP was one of the segments shown during THE ATOM ANT SHOW in 1965. Hanna-Barbera was still producing great cartoons at this time, such as SECRET SQUIRREL, WINSOME WITCH and SQUIDDLY DIDDLY. I'll do future postings featuring those characters soon. I especially love the character designs seen in these shows. The top image here is a color sketch of PRECIOUS PUPP that I did this morning. The middle image, featuring GRANNY SWEET and PRECIOUS PUPP, is scanned from a book of Hanna-Barbera model sheets. The bottom image is a scan of the first panel from the PRECIOUS PUPP story that appears in the 1965 Gold Key ATOM ANT comic book. Click on each image for a larger view! PETER POTAMUS - CLASSIC HANNA-BARBERA!

I've been re-watching many of the all-time great HANNA-BARBERA classic cartoons, including the theme of this posting...PETER POTAMUS and SO-SO. The top image appears to be a 1964 publicity painting for the PETER POTAMUS TV cartoon show. I'm not sure who painted it, but it's a very cool painting. I'd love to see that in color! Also, here's the colorful cover for the 1964 PETER POTAMUS Little Golden Book, with art by Hawley Pratt and Bill Lorencz. I'm also posting a few pieces of PETER POTAMUS and SO-SO character art from their 1998 licensing style guide. I had the honor of inking Iwao Takamoto's PETER POTAMUS and SO-SO pencil art for that style guide, which was produced at Warner Bros. Consumer Products. RICOCHET RABBIT - EARLY DESIGN

Here's an early design of Hanna-Barbera's RICOCHET RABBIT. This design was done by DICK BICKENBACH. I took a print-out of the pencil art and colored it with markers, then inked it with a brush. I've been watching a lot of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons lately. The classic H-B cartoons are some of my all-time favorite 1960s TV cartoons. Click on the image for a larger view! E-mail me at powsley@flash.net for details on how you can own this piece. Thanks! -- Patrick Owsley

FUNKO FRED

I heard from BRIAN MARIOTTI, President of FUNKO, today. He showed me photographs of a new FRED FLINTSTONE vinyl figure that FUNKO is producing. The figure is based on the above FRED FLINTSTONE design that I did just over a year ago for Brian. Brian asked my opinion of the prototype figure and I felt that there were just a couple of minor adjustments. The FRED FLINTSTONE figure looked sensational and I hope to post photos here soon. FUNKO is doing some great figural product based on the old cool HANNA-BARBERA toys! Just the kind of stuff that classic HANNA-BARBERA fans have been wanting.

ALLAN MELVIN - 1922-2008

I just learned that character actor ALLAN MELVIN passed away on Thursday, January 17th of cancer. MELVIN was the voice of Hanna-Barbera's MAGILLA GORILLA, DROOPER of THE BANANA SPLITS and SGT. SNORKEL in the King Features BEETLE BAILEY cartoons. The actor was also known as SAM the Butcher on THE BRADY BUNCH. ALLAN MELVIN starred on SGT. BILKO with Phil Silvers and appeared on THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW and ALL IN THE FAMILY. Another great TV icon is gone.

HANNA-BARBERA CHARACTERS - 18" x 24" original art available!

A couple of people have recently asked me about this piece I did a while ago. It's all of the Hanna-Barbera "animal" characters that appeared between the years 1958 through 1966...from RUFF & REDDY to PRECIOUS PUPP. The original art piece measures 18" x 24" and it is available to own! The original art was too large to scan, so I had to photocopy the original in sections. Then, I pieced the photocopy together for scanning. You can see the lines where the photocopies were cut. Of course, the cut lines do not appear on the original art piece. The art is brush, pen & ink on bristol board and the classic HANNA-BARBERA logo is hand-lettered. E-mail me at powsley@flash.net for details. Thanks! -- Patrick Owsley
